Each of us have had at least one person we have hated during our lives. It matters little whether the rift occurred as a child, in adolescence or when already an adult. Now YOU, the reader, think about that person. Have you fixed them in your mind together with the bad recollections? As a result you want to put as much distance as possible between yourself and this person. Now imagine that you die of natural causes and your mother, yes your mother, well knowing of this great animosity, decides to bury you alongside this terrible person in the same coffin. Your remains are now for ever attached and mixed with them for all eternity. To make things worse, their name will be inscribed on the tomb first with many lines dedicated to their memory, while your name will appear in small letters with only three lines given to your memory.....
On 15th December 2021, a new type of work of art was created in the art world. The new word does not exist in the Italian language. "RITROGRAFIA' is formed by combining the words “RITR-atto” (PORTRAIT) and “bi-OGRAFIA” (BIOGRAPHY). The ambition is to gain recognition and the consequent inclusion in the Treccani Knowledge Portal. A work of art was signed by Sgarbi and Ariano coining the new word represented in the title "RITROGRAFIA".
Maestro Illu Minato presented Sgarbi his RITROGRAFIA no.1 entitled "IMMORTALI" (IMMORTALS), created to celebrate the history of the Cavallini-Sgarbi Family. It is a portrait, according to Ariano's vision, of the main events experienced by the Cavallini-Sgarbi Family using autographed letters, first edition books, accessories and objects intimately linked to the tastes and memories of Rina and Bruno Cavallini, Nino, Elisabetta and Vittorio Sgarbi. This work, signed by Elisabetta and Vittorio, also bears the autograph, together with the compliments, of Pupi Avati, director of the magnificent film "Lei mi parla ancora".
Typology: RITROGRAFIA Width 350 cm Height 270 cm Depth 70 cm
Many Italian museum directors have contacted me and some of them have visited me personally in my office to ask me to exhibit my first RITROGRAFIE in their museums. I declined, explaining that I had already made a commitment with Vittorio Sgarbi and I intended to respect it. One of them, not happy with my reply, asked me at the end of an interview which lasted about 3 hours:
Him: “How many visitors do you think your exhibition will attract?”
Me: “2.000.000”
Him, laughing: "IMPOSSIBLE. YOU'LL NEVER REACH 2.000.000 VISITORS, NOT EVEN WITH SGARBI!"
Me: "Why not?"
Him: "Do you know which exhibition has the highest number of visitors?"
Me: “No”
Him: "It was the Tutankhamen exhibition with 1.400.000 visitors. You don't think you're going to top Tutankhamun, do you?"
Me:"But would you even take away from me my the dream of succeeding? I've created "The True Tomb of Baudelaire", I've produced 15 RITROGRAFIE for each of my 15 discoveries on Van Gogh. Moreover I'm creating another work based on the only original signature, in private hands, of Johanna Van Gogh Bonger (Van Gogh sister in law) who was the first real “influencer in history”, who made Vincent famous.” Do you know who it depends on, to reach 2.000.000?”
Lui: "Who?"
Me: "It will only depend on me and the works I create"
Him: "Maybe you can have your dream, but I'll tell you again, YOU WILL NEVER REACH 2.000.000 VISITORS, NOT EVEN WITH SGARBI!"
Me:"THANK YOU!"
Charles Pierre Baudelaire was born in Paris on 9th April 1821, into a good family, from the second marriage of Joseph-François Baudelaire, a former Senate official and an extremely cultured man. In 1827, at the age of six, Charles was orphaned when is father died in his sixties. Evil entered into his life in the name of Commandant Jacques Aupick. After twenty months of widowhood, his PUTTANA "NON-MOTHER" Caroline remarried the cold and rigid military man. Unceremoniously, Aupick a noisy, strict, stubborn man, settled into the Baudelaires' home and life. Something broke in the soul of the shy boy. The absolute intimacy that bound him to his PUTTANA "NON-MOTHER" disappeared forever. A fierce and continuous hatred was born inside of him for Aupick, the destroyer, accused by Baudelaire of the worst infamy. Charles was soon distanced from his PUTTANA "NON-MOTHER" and he passed through a sad series of boarding schools and colleges, where he received a bourgeois education in order to replicate their way of life.
Charles disappointed everyone, he wanted to be a man of letters, a fact percived as a devil, a murderer, a thief in that mediocre bourgeois-military world. To get him away from Paris, but above all to stifle in him that fatal vocation for literature, he was enlisted into the army and sent to the Indies, but the “ALBATROS” interrupted the journey, returning to Paris in 1842. His father's inheritance awaited him. Life should have been Paradise. Instead it was Hell. Rather than literature, he devoted himself to an intense bohemian lifestyle, increasingly attracted to women and the antiquarian Arondel, the great tempter. The passion for antiques he inherited from his father exploded into crazy spending: furniture, old paintings, fakes, rare books, prints and lunches with friends and girlfriends.
The family, frightened by all this madness, obtained his disqualification from the civil court. The notary Ancelle, another Aupick, was appointed as guardian: he was entrusted with the task of protecting the remaining inherited assets and he did so until the end. This was the worst moment of Baudelaire’s life, he had no more money left and he was forced into a sad existence, hiding from his increasingly demanding creditors.
His letters to his PUTTANA "NON-MOTHER" are full of arguments about money:
"I absolutely need three hundred francs by Wednesday";
"I couldn't deliver the work because the manuscripts are in a boarding house where I haven't paid";
"I beg you, think about the judicial council. It has consumed me for seventeen years. You would not believe or understand the pain it has caused me".
Useless pleas, until his death. But his fortune was safe: Ancelle knew how to do his job, money first: supreme hypocrisy. The "cursed" poet of the "Les Fleurs du mal" died oppressed, in misery.
His PUTTANA "NON-MOTHER" never visited him, ignoring his requests, probably on Aupick's orders.
In 1845 he tried to commit suicide, but he survived. Shortly before, he had written a farewell letter to Jeanne Duval about the smell of her hair, and the fact that he wanted to eat it
In 1848 he took part in the Parisian revolutionary uprisings by climbing onto the insurrectionist barricades himself, shouting 'We must go and shoot General Aupick' (his stepfather).
In 1867 he died of syphilis and his PUTTANA "NON-MOTHER" buried him together with his hated stepfather for all eternity.
PUTTANA "NON-MOTHER" !!!
Most human beings have not had the privilege of having a tomb. Baudelaire represents an exceptional and unique case. He is the only person to have had two tombs, quite distinct and completely 'unconnected' to each other, both in terms of form and the reasons for which they were created. The question is: which is the real one? The third one! Which will give him peace. In the year 2021, on the occasion of the bicentenary of the birth of Charles Pierre Baudelaire, I felt the irresistable urge, almost a boiling of the blood within my veins, to create, through my RITROGRAFIA no.2, a work entitled "The REAL Tomb of Baudelaire. You will never reach 2,000,000, not even with Sgarbi. A Walk with Baudelaire towards L'Azur".
I have created the NEST that the immortal “ALBATROS” has always sought, unsuccessfully, in his forty residences and in death, usually a "source of salvation", capable of giving peace, especially to the most troubled souls. For Baudelaire this did not happen. The damage suffered marked the beginning of the most serious post-mortem injustice in the history of art. A true mockery, rapture of the soul.
Let’s begin with the ending. At the moment, 2022, there are two tombs in honour of Baudelaire. The first tomb holds his remains placed next to the body of his hated stepfather Aupick and was created by his PUTTANA "NON-MOTHER", who dedicated only three lines to him, without reference either to his biological father or to his quality as a poet. The second tomb is a Cenotaph designed in 1892 and built in 1902 by José de Charmoy, on the initiative of the Comité pour ériger un monument à Charles Baudelaire, in which Auguste Rodin took part in, but later abandoned. In the first tomb, Baudelaire, because of the severe juxtaposition imposed on him against his will, has been turning in his grave for the last 150 years. In the second, the poet is only mentioned in name only, but there is nothing there that really represents him.
With this RITROGRAFIA no.2, I intend ideally, to liberate both the memory and the spirit of Charles. In the work, Baudelaire is represented by an autographed letter kept inside a small safety-box. There are only two keys, one in my hands, the other hidden inside the work. The letter, dated 1863 and adressed to Mario Uchard, has interesting references to Edgar Allan Poe, the article Le Peintre de la vie moderne and the collection Poème en Prose. The latter book was published posthumously in 1869. A rare copy no. 111 is attached to this RITROGRAFIA no.2.
At the centre of the work I have placed an original watercolour by Constantin Guys, the most beloved artist of Baudelaire. Syphilis, a 19th century drama, is represented by 2 planches from the book TRAITE' COMPLET des MALADIES VENERIENNES by Dr Philippe Ricord, surrounded respectively by a male chastity belt and by a nest made of female human hair, evoking the emotions of "Un hémisphère dans une chevelure". The special marble bottle containing the precious VINO ERECTUS is a tribute to the poem "L'AME DU VIN".
At the rear of the RITROGRAFIA no.2, as is my custom, I have hidden some very rare letters, autographs, visiting cards and other objects belonging to his real father, Joseph Baudelaire, the PUTTANA "NON-MOTHER" and 165 other well-known personalities, linked to Baudelaire's life, including artists, actors, journalists, writers and friends. Among these original signatures we can find Edouard Manet, Charles Augustin Sainte-Beuve, Richard Wagner, Eugene Delacroix, J.B.C. Corot, J.F. Millet, Gustave Flaubert, Emile Zola, Goncourt, Dumas Pere et Fils, Ary Scheffer, W.M. Thackeray, Vivant-Denon, Lorenzo Bartolini, P.A. Fiorentino, Costantin Guys, Nadar, Theophile Gautier, Auguste Clesinger, Paul Delaroche, Honore Daumier, Alexandre Cabanel, Ernest Christophe, L.E. Lami, P. Gavarni, J. Franceschi, Alfred de Vigny, Victor Hugo, etc. A special place has been reserved at the bottom of the work for those responsible for the worst misdeeds. As Charles suggested, 'J'ai offert un paquet d'excréments' to those eleven persons, 'mauvais poète', who will pick up his halo 'impudemment' from the mud. I have created eleven haloes made of manure that contain their original signatures. These 'great men' are Jacques Pierre Abbatucci, Jacques Aupick, Adolphe Billault, Gustave Bourdin, Ferdinand Brunetiere, Edouard Drumont, Achille Fould, Charles duc Morny, Ernest Pinard, Auguste Rodin and Z.Z.Z.
All the above is in order to restore dignity to a right that has been violated. A right that was his, his alone and which three "inhuman" beings decided to revoke just because of his lifestyle. In fact half the inheritance of his father's estate was still intact and it was all his. But no. A military man, a notary and a PUTTANA "NON-MOTHER" decided that he should be disqualified.
He was not a cursed poet. Cursed is their consideration of money. Simple pieces of paper invented by people who imposed, on the community, that insignificant numbers, written on them, should be worth as a new counterpart to find the things necessary for life.
In this economic system, created by despicable beings, wealth of spirit, sensitivity, ability, creativity, originality or being proudly different counted for nothing. No: all that counts is having pieces of paper with numbers written on them. As proof of this, I have included in the RITROGRAFIA no.2 the original copy typed by the notary Ancelle, from the will of Charles's PUTTANA "NON-MOTHER". For the first time in the world, it is being made public and its content has been translated into Italian and english, thanks to Milena and Benjamin. The translation allows us to truly understand the degree of meanness of the PUTTANA "NON-MOTHER". The will is full of hints bordering on greed, sometimes it is ridiculous.
As always I was inspired by Cesare Pavese during the creation of my RITROGRAFIE and I recall he wrote: 'Mortal man, Leucò, has only this immortal thing. The recollection he bears and the recollection he leaves behind. Names and words are this. In front of recollection they smile too, resigned...".
Now the rights have been fully restored to Charles. I invite you to share this eternal walk with Baudelaire vers l'Azur, finally at rest and in good company. Today, having invested in ART twice as much money as I DIDN’T HAVE, this RITROGRAFIA no.2 will belong to ETERNITY. Not in marble, but in the warm wood of this thousand-year-old tree. I love what I have created and I want to give it to the world, present and future.

Voici mes dernières volontés:
---------- 1 ----------

---------- 4 ----------
Dimorava così come noi all' hotel du Grand miroir, rue de la Montagne. Gli sono dovuti 800 frs.
---------- 5 ----------

Here is my last will and testament:
---------- 1 ----------
I entrust the execution of my last wishes to Mr. ANCELLE, the renown notary, residing in Neuilly, I appoint him for the purpose of executor, asking him to manage all my affairs concering my succession with the widest rights and in particular the postponement within the terms of the law to enforce my dispositions without any obstacle being put in his way. My dispositions require the need of an executor: I must prepare for the possibility that Mr. Ancelle may die prematurly or otherwise be unable to perform his duties.
In his absence, I consider my friend Mr EMON, who, out of friendship for me, will make every effort to ensure that my last intentions were scrupulously
respected, but because of his age, and the fact that the steps to be taken are less familiar to him than to Mr ANCELLE, I would be afraid to subject him to the trails of this appointment. I therefore appoint, as deputy to Monsieur ANCELLE, Monsieur DESMARAIS, notary at this moment in Honfleur, of whom I have heard nothing but praise since I have been living in this town, and who has given me proof of friendship for which I am deeply grateful.
So, I will choose on my death as my executor, whichever notary Mr. ANCELLE and Mr. DESMARAIS, is the owner of the office here in Honfleur, currently run by
Mr DESMARAIS, who will become the successor. The title of successor to Mr. ANCELLE or Mr.DESMARAIS and the honourable position of notary, give me confidence that this notary will religiously execute my will. The replacement of one executor by another will take place either at my death before the function is taken and accepted, or during the execution of the will in the event of the death of the person who accepted it. If I die here in Honfleur, my mortal remains will have to be transported to Paris to the tomb where my husband, General AUPICK, and my son, Charles BAUDELAIRE, rest in the Montparnasse Cemetery. I wish this tomb to be maintained, and to this end, I bequeath to the Fabrique Saint Sulpice, which was my husband's parish, the capital necessary to acquire an annuity of 50 frs at 3%, payable by Fabrique, to maintain this tomb in perpetuity and without ever being obliged to spend the excess of the annuity of 50 frs. I exempt Fabrique from all rights and expenses in respect of this inheritance.
I ask Mr. DESMARAIS to immediatly donate on my death, 500 frs to the poor. I also ask him to take from my estate enough to provide for three years a nice
amount of 100 frs for the nursery lottery. I ask him to have for myself and my son Ch.BAUDELAIRE two masses said a month for three years by Abbot GAILLARD of the Hospice or, in his absence, by another priest, and to dedicate the sum of 72 frs. a month (three frs. per mass) to these masses. I
---------- 2 ----------
turn to Mr DESMARAIS for these matters, as he is from the area.
Having had the misfortune to lose my beloved son, I no longer have a direct heir. Mr. and Mrs. LEVAILLANT, my three cousins, not being married and having reached an advanced age, therefore I do not think I should name them as my heirs, but I wish to note here that I have always been on very good terms with them and that they have always shown me an affection that has never failed. I intend to leave each of them a memento of my tender friendship.
My fortune will be divided after, into three parts: one for Mr EMON who was my husband's devoted friend and who has not ceased to shower me with care
and attention since my widowhood. The other for Mr. ANCELLE who, for 25 years, rendered immense services to me and my son; finally, the third part will be for Madame BAUDELAIRE, the widow, who will additionally enjoy the annuity of 900 frs which belonged to her husband Alphonse BAUDELAIRE and to which she is entitled by right. I bequeath to Aimée FALAISE who has served me faithfully for ten years the sum of eight thousand francs free of any transfer tax, but she will only benefit from this legacy if she remains with me until my death. I also give her a gold watch, if she doesn’t not have one at the time, with a chain, an imitation of the Mexican chain, which will be found in my jewellery box. I also give her, her complete room: bed, chest of drawers, three pairs of caliquot sheets, three pillowcases, a dozen red towels, a dozen tea towels, two sets of imitation silver cutlery, two teaspoons, some kitchen utensils (not made of copper).
I give to Madame BAUDELAIRE, my five silver place settings, the soup spoon, the only ones I have in silver, the other ones, being a set, will be part of the
succession. I give her my entire wardrobe, my jewellery, shawls, furs, lace, committing her to hand over to Aimée what she does not want. Everything I designate as belonging to Madame Baudelaire will be outside of and in addition to her share of the inheritance. I give her all my household linen with the exception of a beautiful damask service which Madame EMON had chosen and bought for me when I was in Constantinople, I am very happy to give it to her.
I bequeath to the town of Gravelines, where my husband spent his youth, having been brought up and adopted by M. BAUDART, his beautiful marble bust,
the inhabitants of Gravelines having kept such good memories of him that they have named one of the streets of their town after AUPICK. I bequeath to my cousin General LEVAILLANT, the elder, who lives in SIZANNES (Marne) all the published volumes of the correspondence of Emperor Napoleon I, beautifully bound in red leather.
I bequeath to my cousin Charles Levaillant, Major-General, a box of pistols that the Duchess of Orleans had given to my husband as a souvenir from the
prince who had great affection for him. These pistols had belonged to the prince. I am giving M. DESMARAIS the wines and spirits that are in my cellar, the miniature portrait of the Duke of Orleans made by Madame de MIRBEL which will be on my husband's desk.
---------- 3 ----------
I give Mrs. DESMARAIS my old watch with its chain and a small pair of scissors intended to be attached to the chain. I will later make known by codicilLE the mementos and gifts that I wish to leave to my friends, but fearing to be surprised by death, I affix my signature here without delay, but not without testifying to Mr. EMON and Mr. ANCELLE my gratitude for the affection that they have shown me for so many years.
Carried out at Honfleur, in good health, with all my faculties, this twenty-seventh day of March, one thousand eight hundred and sixty-nine. Signed: Caroline DUFAYS, widow in first marriage to Joseph François BAUDELAIRE, and in second marriage to General AUPICK.
CODICILLE
I have just added these provisions to my will: MR. EMON, in memory of his old friend General AUPICK, and also in memory of me, must maintain his portraits in excellent condition; the large picture containing his decorations (a gift from him, M. EMON) the small black marble picture containing the bullet that was extracted from my husband's knee in 1837, which will be on the mantelpiece in the General's study. I also give him the two shells that are also on this same mantelpiece. I beg Madame BAUDELAIRE to cherish the portrait of Monsieur BAUDELAIRE père, painted by RENAUD. The portrait of Mr. BOUDARD, the General's adoptive father will have to be returned to the MILOT NANFH, AUDISERT family; I charge M. EMON with this task; as he is related to these people. I give Mr. Charles ASSELINEAU three framed portraits of my son, which he will give to Ch. BAUDELAIRE's friends. I ask Madame BAUDELAIRE to keep the one when he was a boarder, the picture is in my dressing room hanging on a painting where the General is drawn with his cap, being only a Colonel.
Signed: G. widow AUPICK, in first marriage to Joseph François BAUDELAIRE, in second marriage to General AUPICK. The third day of October, Honfleur, one thousand eight hundred and sixty-nine.
---------- 4 ----------
I owe a debt of gratitude to Mr Ch. ASSELINEAU, author, old friend, who was tenderly attached to my son, and who faithfully attached himself to his memory, published his works with the greatest care and edited a very valuable book entitled Charles BAUDELAIRE, Sa vie et ses oeuvres. I bequeath to him, as a token of gratitude on behalf of his friend, the sum of ten thousand francs (exempt from all transfer taxes).
Signed: C. AUPICK, widow in first marriage to Joseph François BAUDELAIRE, in second marriage to General AUPICK. Honfleur this 1st January 1870.
I had said above that I would leave my three cousins LEVAILLANT only memories of friendship, but today, reflecting on the fact that Commander Jean LEVAILLANT, not having reached the rank of general like his brothers, finds himself with a modest pension, having a not very wealthy position perhaps. I come to say here that I want the heirs of my fortune whom I have named above: Mme BAUDELAIRE, M. EMON, M. ANCELLE, to grant a life annuity of 500 frs for his entire life to Commander Jean Jacques LEVAILLANT my first cousin.
10th March 1870 Signed: C. widow AUPICK.
CONTINUATION OF MY LAST WILL
My son Charles BAUDELAIRE, who died in August 1867, left debts which have not yet been fully discharged in this month of November 1870. The business of the succession has dragged on and on and is not yet finished. I am preoccupied with the thought of perhaps being surprised by death before these debts are fully paid. Mr. ANCELLE must have the list of creditors, but if unfortunately Mr. ANCELLE had not left this list, either because of death or illness, it could perhaps be found with Mr. REYNAL his successor, notary at 10 rue Saint Ferdinand. In any case, here are some individuals whom I shall indicate and who I know have not been paid. Mr. STEVENS, (Arthur) dealer in paintings, father of the painter of the same name who was living in Brussels when I went there in 1866 to look after my son. He was staying with us at the Hotel du Grand miroir, rue de la Montagne. He is owed 800 frs.
---------- 5 ----------
Maxime DUCAMP, in turn, is owed about 500 frs. SERVAIS, framer, I do not know how much is owed to him. One would have to inquire. I urge my executors to make a thorough search in this regard. They will find here the expression of my gratitude for the service rendered to the memory of my beloved son.
Carried out on 3rd November 1870
